1. Dbanj And MoHits Records
Former Mo’Hits Records’ frontline act, Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj, parted ways with his label of many years in 2011. Unconfirmed reports says the fallout between D’Banj and Mo’Hits’ boss, Don Jazzy, who was responsible for most of D’Banj’s hit tracks, is not unconnected to disagreement on royalty from Mr. Endowed remix featuring American rapper, Snoop Dogg.
2. Wande Coal And MoHits Records
Award winning recording artist, Wande Ojosipe, popularly known as Wande Coal parted ways with Mavin Records on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. It was reported that Wande Coal was unhappy with the way he’s been treated at Mo’ Hits caused by a number of reasons ranging from feelings of relegation to WC’s reported lack of respect.
3. Wizkid And EME Records
Wizkid has parted ways with the Banky W led E.M.E record label. Wizkid, who parted ways with his long time manager and friend Osagie Osarenkhoe, in September 2012, is said to be dissatisfied with his contract agreement and sharing quota within the label.
4. Brymo And Chocolate City Records
Brymo left Chocolate City in 2013 shortly after the release of Son of A Carpenter, his debut album on the label, accusing the company of failing to promote the record. The music company, on the other hand, said the artiste breached a five-year contract that required him to release three albums between 2011 and 2016. Brymo was later taken to court by Audu Maikori’s Chocolate City following alleged contract infringements.
5. Harrysong And Five Star Music Records
The drama between Harrysong and the record label started in January, after the singer accused the company of not appreciating his efforts.
He dumped the label, launched his own company Alter Plate, prompting a media/police drama that stretched for days. Five Star Music ordered his arrest, accusing the singer of breaching a contractual agreement and also forging Kcee’s brother, E-Money’s signature.
6. Iyanya And MMMG Records
Iyanya parted ways with fellow record label owner, Ubi Franklin. Financial mismanagement issues were said to be a huge part of the disagreement. Iyanya and Ubi have long not seen eye to eye over the remittance of booking and appearance fees. According to a source, there have been concerns over Ubi’s handling of the business finances.
7. Skale And Baseline Records
Skales in no new comer to record label wars, only this time he may have bitten more than he can chew. In 2014 he parted ways with E.M.E Records and almost immediately got another record deal with Baseline Records.
At the time, the deal was quite huge and was valued at well over N200m. Fast-forward to May 2016, the singer and his manager have been arrested, detained and even spent a night in detention as it was reported that both the artiste and his manager, Osagie, were arrested by the label over allegations of fraud.
Baseline alleged that Skale’s manager, Osagie, committed fraud against the company with monies totalling about N13,374,000. Osagie has denied the allegation, stating that there was never and would never be any basis to conclude that she had been dubious or fraudulent in her dealings with the label.
8. Runtown And Ericmany Entertainment
Douglas Jack Agu, better known by his stage name, Runtown, shot into limelight with his hit song, Gallardo, featuring Davido, which garnered about 418,000 views on VeVo in two months. This probably impressed the management of Ericmany Records because they signed him onto the record label shortly after in 2014. Runtown terminated his deal with Ericmany Entertainment in May, 2016. Runtown was sued in the Federal High Court by Ericmany on allegations that he signs up, concludes and attends musical shows without the knowledge of the label. On his own part Runtown cited money problems, threat to life and gross disrespect from his label CEO, Prince Okwudili Umenyiora aka Dilly.
9. Vector And YSG
In Vector’s case, his contract with YSG Entertainment was supposed to expire in 2017 but he left the label in 2013, with sources saying the artiste felt the label was not going in the right direction with his brand and promotion.
Of course the label sued him and the rapper, was ordered on Friday, January 31, 2014 to refrain from all musical activities by a Federal High Court after an injunction was filed against him by his label.
Vector has since apologised to his label and fans as he agreed to settle the case out of court and remain an indie artist.
10. Milli And Chocolate City
The rap artiste claimed that he was not getting enough support from his record label after all the work he had done for them. According to him, he co-produced M.I’s album, Chairman and the TICBN album but when it was time for him to release his music, he claimed there was always one delay or the other. In an interview, he stated that it seemed M.I was not proud of him.
